In the world of luxury residential and wellness spaces, transforming an architectural concept into a fully realized, meticulously detailed design takes seamless collaboration between designers, architects, and builders.
The Aurora Wellness Centre is a prime example of how Lisa Elliott Interior Design works closely with industry partners to bring high-end spaces to life, crafting environments that align with both the architect’s vision and the builder’s technical know-how.
Situated in the exclusive Aurora Apartments in Melbourne, the Wellness Centre was developed as a retreat for residents, adding a serene escape to the building’s entertainment level. During Melbourne’s 2020 lockdown, the building management saw an opportunity to enhance resident amenities by converting an empty space into this unique wellness destination. Architecturally, the Centre’s initial concept was sketched, but the details required a more defined, immersive experience – one that only the right collaboration could achieve.

Harmonising Vision with Detail
Working from the architect’s initial concept, I embraced the challenge of developing a detailed design that aligned with the building’s established interiors. This concept-driven approach is one of our hallmarks. For the Aurora project, the aim was to evoke the feel of a moody, grotto-like sanctuary. The resulting space immerses residents in dark Venetian plaster walls, blackbutt timber cladding, and earthy grey marble, creating an inviting space for relaxation and mindfulness. Each material was thoughtfully selected to create an atmosphere of escape, with the scent of natural timber lending a sensory layer to the experience.
Collaborating with the builder, Rodine, from the beginning allowed us to address potential challenges early on. From logistical considerations—such as how to bring in large fixtures through narrow access points—to discussing custom spa solutions, every detail was reviewed and fine-tuned. Together, we weighed options for the spa design, ultimately creating a custom stone and timber surround that harmonised perfectly with the space’s aesthetic.
Practical Solutions for Elevated Design
The collaboration with Rodine not only ensured precision in executing the architect’s vision but also enabled practical solutions to be integrated seamlessly. The compact Wellness Centre needed to meet high standards for accessibility without compromising on luxury or design intent. One of the standout features is a concealed sling lift, which I designed for discreet spa access, providing wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility the opportunity to enjoy the space. This solution exemplifies how our collaborative approach enables us to prioritize accessibility and aesthetic value equally.
Furthermore, ongoing dialogue with Rodine allowed us to assess and select the most appropriate materials that met the client’s budget and vision, creating a space that is not only visually striking but also durable and easy to maintain. This proactive engagement enabled us to quickly resolve intricate design expectations, refining each element to meet the high standards of luxury our clients expect.
Designing for Wellness and Functionality
This meticulously detailed Wellness Centre highlights our dedication to high-end design that’s both functional and beautiful. The inclusion of features such as a custom spa, textured stone steps, bench seating, saunas, a shower & change area, and an integrated tea bench contributes to an environment that’s both restful and thoughtfully designed. Subtle yet luxurious touches, such as feature lighting and reindeer moss accents, complete the space, reinforcing the soothing and opulent atmosphere our clients value. Why hire an Interior Designer in Melbourne for your Wellbeing-Focused Home?
Hiring a qualified Interior Designer in Melbourne allows you to design your home with intention. Designers can take the time to consider how your daily rituals – like mediation, exercise, and relaxation – can be supported by the environment around you. By collaborating early on with your Architect and Interior Designer, you can ensure that both the architecture and the interiors work together seamlessly to support your lifestyle and wellbeing.
Gather your Ideal Design Team Early
Building or renovating a luxury home requires more than just a good Architect. To ensure your home supports your daily rituals and lifestyle, it’s essential to bring in a highly skilled Interior Designer at the start of the process. Getting an Interior Designer onboard early ensures a more integrated design approach. You’ll benefit from a Peer Review where your designer will offer feedback on layouts, suggest furniture arrangements, assess flow, and provide advice on materials.
Supporting Your Architect by Focusing on the Interiors
When building or renovating a home, architects face increasingly complex challenges such as town planning regulations, environmental considerations, and compliance with ever-evolving building codes. By hiring an Interior Designer to handle the finer details of your interiors, you allow your architect to focus on the broader structural elements of your home. A dedicated designer can help alleviate some of that pressure, ensuring that your homes interiors are meticulously planned and beautifully executed.

So, why Hire an Interior Designer?
Many clients often overlook the value of hiring a professional interior designer, especially when embarking on high-end or complex builds. Some may believe that working solely with a builder and selecting finishes as they go will suffice. However, without a cohesive design vision, this often results in last-minute decisions, limited choices, and unforeseen costs due to changes or variations not accounted for by the builder.
Collaborating with a qualified interior designer from the start allows for strategic planning, ensuring that every aspect—layouts, finishes, and furnishings—are meticulously designed to align with both function and aesthetics. You’ll receive detailed drawings and material selections early on, allowing for competitive quoting and eliminating guesswork.
Beyond aesthetics, you require a highly trained, registered interior designer, particularly for complex luxury residential and commercial projects. This is not just about having a “good eye” for design; it’s about ensuring spaces meet regulatory standards, timelines, and a vision that enhances the overall architecture.
By working with a professional, you ensure a seamless process that saves both time and money while delivering a final product that matches your project goals.
